Screened by security...

With a couple of hours to kill in Hull city centre, we thought we'd head into the Ferens art gallery and, after that, nip over to the Maritime Museum. We entered the Ferens and quickly realised that all was not as it should be. Oh, no, there were lots and lots of besuited beefcake gentlemen, wearing ear pieces and eyeing us up suspiciously. I noticed that they all wore the same tiny lapel badges and deduced that they were members of this country's fine security services. Feeling guilty, as we have both nurtured subversive thoughts in our time, we fled and headed across the road. Only to be met by more security - this time a gent wanting to look inside our bag and then inside the bag inside that bag. "We're expecting a visitor," he mumbled by way of explanatation. "Ooh, who?" "Nobody you'll know." We were allowed in, and stumbled around, being watched by the suits. Again, we didn't hang around but felt the need to go and buy a drink and return to watch this walkie talkie-fuelled activity so we could find out who this bleedin' VIP was that was ruining our culture browsing. Eventually, surrounded by these heavies, a bland woman in a 20-year-old floral print frock walked across Queen Victoria Square and disappeared into the museum, never to be seen again. What on earth all the fuss was we'll probably never know. Slightly more bizarre was that Hull's big BBC/Phillips screen, of late being used to wow crowds with World Cup football, was playing host to a tennis computer game, with no sign of any console bashers in sight. I'm beginning to think that I consumed a hefty amount of Class A drugs before I set off into town this morning.

That's shameless promotion, Corona. Anyway, the strange thing frightened us and we can no longer sleep during the hours of darkness.
