Messing about on the river...

I saw Hull from an entirely different perspective today - I had the good fortune to travel up the river the city was built on on a barge (not usually a done thing for normal folk). All part of this project I'm involved with on the council estate. It was a fascinating day out aboard the City of Hull, and with Roy the Skipper (left, at the other end of the boat. The fore, I think I'm correct in bullshitting) in control ("I've been at this for 40 years") our party of young folk and adults were in an extremely safe - if gnarled and callousy - pair of hands. Hull actually looks quite sad from the river - as if its better days are long behind it, with ancient timbers rotting away, bridges corroding and warehouses standing empty and becoming derelict. But, oh, if these historical buildings could tell a story, what an amazing tale it would be. Now, it just seems to be a total waste to let the riverfront just disintegrate. I took my camera, hoping to capture this rare occasion a) for posterity and b) for my photoblog. But bugger me if both sets of recently recharged rechargable batteries died a death after a couple of snaps. So I was left with the camera on my phone. And, eek, the weather. It started off as a glorious day and turned quite soggy and choppy - no problem on the River Hull but it did make the barge bob up and down quite a lot when we turned onto the Humber before heading into Hull Marina. Top day.

Yeah, a grand day out I reckon. Where did you start from? Are the kids writing about it?

We set off from the old pier head, where that guy runs his parasailing business and from where a long since defunct ferry used to head across the Humber, spun about in the Humber for an odd length of time and then headed down the Hull for about 45 minutes, then turned round. Some of the kids wrote stuff while we travelled, others were too bashful and are doing it at home - and we're planning to publish them in a magazine that's getting distributed on Bransholme. It was a great way to look at Hull and I'm pretty sure they all got something out of it.

Oh, and we did it twice, with two different groups.
