Close and oppose...

Saturday was M's cousin's stag day/night. And very good it was too. Physical exertion in the form of Go Ape at Dalby Forest followed by Mexican-themed fun in the city of Leeds - food, sombreros, Zapata mostachos, a penata carried by the stag and, naturally, copious amounts of alcohol. Once the latter wore off, rather late on Sunday, well, the aches and pains resulting from swinging through the trees became all too apparent. The odd thing about Go Ape is that I pretty much hated everything other than heading down zip lines but, although I'm aware that this will sound contradictory, also loved the experience. Lessons were learned - I am far from fit; despite spending my first decade in the world of work balancing precariously on ladders, walking across ridge tiles and up several lifts of scaffolding, I don't appear to get on with heights anymore; the advice 'don't look down' is impossible to follow when you're trying to place your foot on a piece of rope; 'close and oppose' is essential information; I hate cargo nets and; once the small wooden swing that you're standing on starts to sway violently from side-to-side it takes an inordinate amount of time to stop that motion because a) you're aware how stupid you look to the people waiting to follow you and b) you don't want to look even more stupid by falling off the thing. I am still removing bark from various crevices and, last night, found a lovely spell lodged in the back of my leg.

We stayed overnight in a Yorkshire cricket lover's paradise - Headingley Lodge, which is, to all intents and purposes, a collection of hospitality boxes containing beds, all of which overlook the hallowed playing surface at, you guessed it, Headingley. But I am no cricket lover and the view was pretty much lost on me. On Sunday, whilst in the recovery position and gulping down tea, we watched, from the room, as the covers were removed and a young chap jet washed one of the wickets. My roommate found serious flaws in the young chap's technique. We would have shouted instructions but, sadly, the door leading to the seating area and the outside world is secure on non-match days. Which is just as well otherwise there's a distinct possibility that we'd have been tearing up the grass when we got back to the hotel after our Mexican fun ended. Good use of a facility that would otherwise be standing empty though.

Dip in proceedings...

Last night we went to a Mexican restaurant, to celebrate mother's birthday by eating spicy food. There was an incident, when M found a shard of plastic on her plate of Jalapeno Poppers. She mentioned it to a waiter, who was very apologetic. As he was about to leave, having told us that he would be mentioning it to the manager, he opted to clear some of our plates, and promptly upturned a dish of garlic dip over mother's jacket. It was a piece of comedy genius, only flawed by the following points. 1) M cut the roof of her mouth on said plastic and 2) mother's jacket was damaged. But, that aside, I laughed out loud and really enjoyed this moment, which was funnier than all 79 series of My Family put together. Later, when I had stopped laughing, M's mouth had been cauterized by a piping hot burrito and mother was getting a little tipsy on Mexican cocktails, the manager informed us that he would ensure that all of M's food was free of charge. In return, we promised not to mention his restaurant's name in any subsequent blog post. See, that's all it takes, I can be bought. For a starter and a main course.

More jalapeños...

Today's highlight was an outing to get some Mexican food. A table for six and lots of burritos flying around. Splendid. This weekend there's been further progress on the boxes front and various odds and sods stored haphazardly in the garage. Yes, a garage. Don't get the wrong idea - the garage is almost as big as, if not bigger than, the property we're now living in. We're using the garage as a sort of glorified dustbin while our other glorified dustbin, the car, remains parked on the wrong side of the up-and-over door.

Did some work on one of two new plays. Had to - there's a meeting looming and still not much of a plot. Or there wasn't. Now there is. Sort of. I also headed off and bought a new domain name relating to this play with a bit of a plot's title. Which, given it's a working title and a script is still an abstract notion, may well prove to be a fiver wasted. This purchase was prompted by the stumbled across knowledge that On A Shout's .co.uk and .com versions were parked back in December. Just a coincidence, I'm sure. But I like my working title, which is four words long. And the .co.uk of it now belongs to me. My vanity knows no bounds.

I am watching Mark Lawson Talks To... on the frankly superb and lifestyle-changing BBC iPlayer. I've been aware of Lawson's many ticks for quite some time but this show's two static cameras approach (no shot-reverse shot noddy shenanigans here, it's all very commendably anti-fake magic of TV) to recording the interview seems to exacerbate Lawson's twitchiness and blinking. And what is it with his left hand? Why does he keep curling up his fingers and staring at his finger ends? Wouldn't it be better if he went and bought himself some nail clippers and shed whatever it is that's bothering him/me/possibly you?
