Spurning X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, we celebrated Diwali with our Hindu friends tonight. It was, I must say, a comedy of errors, thanks, mainly, to a set of curtains that kept opening and closing when they shouldn't have and a compere whose mastery of microphone technique wasn't all it could be. There was also a 'skit' on the epic legend of Ram, which was preceded by an explanation, in English, that went on four times longer than the actual performance and a lovely moment when we were all blinded by spots that shone in our eyes during a bit of Bollywood-style disco dancing. Let there be light indeed.
