Who can be wise, amazed, temp'rate and furious...

Yesterday was way too much like an episode of Curb Your Enthusiasm. What started as a simple trip out to meet a mate and chew the fat developed into an intricate story arc that involved a near collision, road rage and, later, a lost Saab immobiliser and a broken television. I can't even start to explain it but it was one of the more frustrating, traumatic and hilarious episodes of my existence.

Episode two took place down the theatre post a production of Macbeth. Police and their assorted vans and meat wagons were highly visible down Spring Street. We'd been wondering where one of the actors had disappeared to, although we were not inquisitive enough to move from the comfort of the theatre bar. As it was he'd witnessed some scuffle (nothing to do with the theatre or its patrons, I hasten to add) and was involved in giving an in-depth witness statement. The irony was he'd been a regular in The Bill for a couple of years, a fact that, I think, prolonged the whole procedure. Anyway, after checking he wasn't going to be carted off, and as the cast of Macbeth, their friends and family and little old me exited the building en route to another bar, a PC was keen to engage us in chat. "What on earth made you lot come to see Macbeth?" he asked, looking at the shoddy and disheveled state of us poverty stricken, burly, uneducated sorts. "Well, I am Macbeth," replied the lead. "Oh. Erm. I like the theatre. In fact, I was in the West End just the other week. Watched that Lion King." "Ah, yeah," said I, "One of Shakespeare's lesser known works." (some of the plot is, after all, half-inched from Hamlet). "Was he a copper or a crim?" said the filth, nodding in the direction of our actor pal. "He was on your side," someone piped up. This wasn't good enough. "We hate The Bill," he said, before telling us that he didn't even know that Hull Truck existed and that they'd had trouble finding it. Which might have something to do with this.
