Golden haunts...

To York. I took the opportunity to visit two pubs I've never ventured into before - the Golden Fleece ("one of the oldest and most haunted pubs in York") and the Golden Lion ("Fosters - coming soon." "See in the New Year with us. Open 'til 3am". No signs to say as much but apparently the underground ladies toilets in the Golden Lion are haunted and, according to someone sat next to me, the atmosphere down there "can only be described as heavy"). On the walk back to the car saw, for the first time, another pub that I wished I'd gone into - The Yorkshire Terrier, which is above a sweet shop on Stonegate and sells various real ales. The city was full of two types of people - those walking incredibly slowly and those walking incredibly quickly. I tried to introduce a third way but failed, either carried along in the rush or held up by those in front of me. York, like Hull and lots of other cities, has a German market at the moment. These things, it crossed my mind as I ate a spicy Bratwurst in a bread bun, are fast becoming an integral part of a traditional British Christmas. I would like to think that the cultural exchange is two way traffic and Berlin is currently being occupied by market traders from Hull selling pirated Peter Kay DVDs, gold hoopy earrings and big sheets of Panasonic batteries for £1 (1.47).

Great post, Dave. The thought of a market in Berlin selling fake DVDs and batteries nearly had me spitting coffee all over my keyboard!
