Pleased to meet you...

It is a lovely feeling when people show genuine excitement for a crazy madcap idea you originally mentioned just in passing when babbling on incoherently about something else. Today's meeting - with Mr Literary Development and Mr Joint Artistic Director - went well and, for something that exists mostly in the ether and on a single side of A4 at the moment (or perhaps because that's all it is right now), there was much back and forth chat about plot, characters and staging. There was a joint feeling that this play should be of epic proportions. Now I have to go away and write something. I thought at some point that they would also ask me what they had to do to get on board the lifeboat with the crew but that conversation never arose - they seem happy for me to just do all that without them. So, my head is now riddled with two enormous projects - the Rank business and the lifeboat crew business - both vying for attention and both very important to me. It's a mere case of prioritising what should come first, that's all, but, this afternoon at least, there's something of a headache going on in there. All that will ease when I knuckle down and get started, leaving the chat behind. And, of course, when I ingest some Ibruprofen. Today felt very real. A lot of the time as 'a writer' it all feels a bit silly and pretend and not like real work at all. But today was real enough and, unlike the other week, I actually managed to talk about what I have in mind and most of it was welcomed by the two creatives sat in the room with me. So, lesson # one, take some notes in to these meetings with you and, especially handy tip coming up, actually refer to them now and then.

Stuff's finally happening on the site earmarked for the new Hull Truck (it can't be called the new theatre, there is a much older New Theatre in the city already). The new place is due for completion in 2008, I think, so not much to see just yet. But it won't be long. Who knows what will be happening by then. Perhaps I'll have finished the lifeboat play! Perhaps I'll be on with something else! Perhaps I'll be bankrupt and back on building sites freezing my knackers off! It's a great, mind-blowing thought that some of my stuff might well be aired in something that doesn't physically exist as yet.

The strangest thing about this comment spam is that the site it sends you to is a 'search' box that doesn't do anything and some links to blank pages. It doesn't even help them get a better Google ranking as Blogger inserts REL="nofollow" into the link to tell search engines to ignore it.

What's it all about?

It's certainly baffling me a lot, just like the email spam which is offering me stock exchange news, hints and tips - I get around ten of those a day.
