A nice moment; meeting up with an old and very faithful mate and his girlfriend, the pair of them here from Japan but finding the time to drop by Leeds for a very speedy liaison in an English pub down an alley marked by some very pleasant Suck cok (sic) graffiti. I take my friends to the nicest places, eh? I'd like to think that when we hit Japan next year they will return the favour. It's been a while since I've seen Mike. Indeed, the last time was when I stayed at his house in London in 2003, on my way back from Hong Kong. That's far too long. But what can you do? Yet we seemed to pick up where we left off - not saying anything that would rate high on a scale of gravitas but just saying enough. Yuka is very nice; together they make a fine couple. Like us, they are expecting a child. I wish I could have spent a lot more time with the two of them. But, well, there's no stopping the heady world of opera for anyone, is there?

I'm writing this rather bleary eyed having arrived back over here something like eight hours ago. Great to see you, albeit very briefly. Of course you're all very welcome here next year. We can both sit up all night listening to babies crying.
