War. Huh. What is it good for...

If the Second World War had been fought in the park around the corner behind some temporary barriers by 50 military firing glorified caps guns with half a dozen armoured vehicles between them it would have looked exactly like the battle re-enactment we wandered to today - part of a weekend of military fun and, just occasionally, armed forces PR, that also consisted of such entertaining delights as the chance to sit in an Anderson shelter, watch, listen and dance to some live wartime toons and eat over-priced chips without the need of a ration book. It was, I hasten to add, jolly good fun, the weather was amazing (indeed, so hot and exhausting that during proceedings lots of people were stepping over a man who had collapsed) and everything had a very authentic fusty odour about it. Britain, aided by a few allies, won all over again, by the way.
